Become our new Principal

If you want to change the world, come to Somerville.

Welcome

Thank you for your interest in Somerville College.

Somerville is an Oxford College like no other. Founded in 1879 to provide an opportunity for women, Somerville remains liberal, progressive and inclusive. We pride ourselves on our diverse community of Fellows and students, who have included men since 1994, and we remain true to our founding principles: an ethos of excellence in the context of diversity and access is at the core of all decision-making, and characterises the College to this day.

Our current Principal, Baroness Jan Royall, will complete her term as Principal in 2025, and we are now seeking a new Head of House to build on Jan’s legacy and our success as a College. The Principal’s role is to chair the Governing Body and major College Committees, foster academic achievement, facilitate the improvement of all aspects of the life of the College, and sustain and develop relationships with our alumni. The incoming Principal will be committed to representing Somerville externally, promoting academic excellence, leading the diversity agenda, and enhancing the welfare of the Somerville Community.

The Principal provides leadership across all academic, operational, and general affairs of the College, including promoting the academic ethos of the College and working closely with the Governing Body and College Officers.

The College is seeking an inspiring individual who is distinguished in their field and who possesses a a track record of successful, caring, careful, and compassionate leadership. Our new principal will possess the ability to lead through wide engagement with the College’s diverse community, and will champion the wellbeing of staff and students while leading with transparency and fairness. They will spearhead key missions and lead negotiations to ensure that Somerville continues to be a warm, inclusive, and thriving community.

Somerville is committed to Equal Opportunities and welcomes applications from all sections of society.
